Paradise Take II, the Island of Koh Tao

Oct 13/Day 13: scuba diving trip to Koh Tao--dove Chumpon Pinnacles and Aow Leuk.

The dive master called the night before to tell me it was going to be a rough boat trip to Koh Tao. The trip to Koh Tao is about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Koh Samui. I popped a few scopolamine for the trip out--I wasn't going to risk it.

All aboard for Koh Tao. It turned out to be much calmer than expected, which was a good thing for the girl sitting next to me who was clutching a garbage bag during most of the journey.

I lucked out and had my own dive master. Some people were scared off by the choppy forecast and others skipped it because there was a full moon party the night before on a nearby island. For our morning dive, we went to Chumpon Pinnacles, a group of submerged granite rock in the sea. It was about a 65 feet dive, making it a deep dive. There were huge schools of small fish everywhere, with each school totaling at least a couple hundred. We were essentially floating in schools of fish during most of our dive. The reef looked very healthy, with sea anemones and Giant Clams all over. We also saw Giant Grouper, among other large fish, and cleaning shrimp. Last week they saw a whale shark here, but no such luck today.

The second dive was Aow Leuk, a much shallower dive--around 30 feet. It was nice diving with good visibility, which was a little surprising considering the recent rains and strong winds. Again, great coral and a good variety of fish. There weren't as many schools of fish at this dive sight.

The beach at Mango Bay, Koh Tao where we stopped to drop off snorkelers.

In light of the forecast, Anna opted for a spa day instead of snorkeling. She went to Tamarind Spa and loved it.

I was back in time for a quick swim in the pool and a sunset lounge with Anna before we headed to dinner.

Anna is striking a pose at sunset.

Me just lounging....

We proclaimed this man to be Jesus because he could walk on water.

We went to dinner at the Farm House. It is pretty unique in that it is situated in a rice patty. Somehow we failed to take any pictures of the view from the restaurant. It appears we were slacking with our picture taking, which is surprising because Anna and I have taken over 2,000 pictures in the past two weeks. Let's hope no one gets stuck looking at all of them!

Some tasty Thai food, then off to bed....

Anna is our official food photographer. I had to promise her I'd take pictures of the food in India.

Another day in Koh Samui tomorrow and then off to Chiang Mai in the evening.
